On the Eve of Never Leaving
November 1, 2019 – January 11, 2020
Gagosian Gallery Beverly Hills

A large body of work, consisting of drawings and sculptures by the Italian artist, Tatiana Trouvé, are on view at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills.  The title of this exhibition, On the Eve of Never Leaving, is as poetic as the artist’s work itself. It is taken from a poem by the poet, Alvaro de Campos/Fernando Pessoa. As I was walking through this exhibition space, moving on from one painting to another, it felt as though I was actually sleepwalking. It felt as though I was in the middle of a dream, in a foggy, timeless, space. It felt as though I was walking through all these colors — all these blues, greens, and grays — dreaming and witnessing these shades, tones, and hues running into each other then coming together and creating Tatiana Trouvé’s beautiful art.

Lari Pittman
Declaration of Independence
Sept 29,2019 – January 5, 2020
Hammer Museum

The exhibition, Declaration of Independence, at the Hammer Museum, by South Pacific painter, Lari Pittman, is a huge body of work. Pittman, who was born in Los Angeles, uses huge canvasses in his work. In every piece of these wallpaper-like painted canvasses, you see a huge amount of shapes, movements, and colors, as well as a huge amount of noise and action going on. There is not a moment of silence in any of his work. Walking through this exhibition space, going from one painting to another, you find yourself getting lost in the maze of triangles and squares, hardly finding your way back home. The final word is that in these canvasses, the artist has said it all. No secrets and no mystery remains. Everything is out, and everything has already been told!

Walking through this exhibition space, going from one painting to another, I came to the conclusion that each small part of every painting, if separated from the whole, could easily work as a complete painting on its own. All the noise and action you witness in Lari Pittman’s work takes your breath away — all in a beautiful way, of course!
